dangerous elevator

When the boss bans employees from using the goods elevator it’s for a reason

This happened just yesterday in a bread shop in Taidong, Taiwan. Many bread shops there bake their products on the premises. This is one

An employee, surnamed Yan aged 30, who normally worked at another branch, had made a visit to her former place of employment. She had arranged to meet her sister for dinner later but wanted to cook dumplings for dinner for her former colleagues before leaving. The kitchen was on the second floor (first floor in the UK). It wouldn’t have taken long to walk up to the second floor, about 10 seconds, but she decided to use the goods elevator that is there because there’s an oven on the second floor and it is used to carry flour up. There’s a sign saying “Employees are forbidden from using the goods elevator” and the boss said afterwards that employees have been told time and again not to use the goods elevator. However, in what proved to be a major misjudgment considering what happen next, she decided to use it anyway. It probably wasn’t the first time. Anyway, as it was going up, she stuck her head out to say something to her colleagues and her head was sliced off when the bottom of the elevator reached the top of the lift opening. Her head fell onto the ground in front of stunned colleagues while her body was carried to the second floor. Bad time to stick her head out. Whatever it was, it could have waited. She intended to treat her colleagues by cooking them dinner but ended up not just dead and headless. Isn’t life fragile when people are careless. This incident reminds me of some old B&W footage I saw years ago of a bi-plane going down the runway and it passes someone stood on a car at the side and the wing takes his head clean off…true story. All it takes is the right angle, right speed and anything thin and hard and off with your head.

There’s something about having the head chopped off that horrifies people. It seems much scarier than just dying. I leave that to others to discuss.

This nasty, bloody incident does though show the danger of lifts when badly maintained or used wrongly. It’s not the first time someone has been not just killed but decapitated and mashed up in a lift. It seems unlikely that her colleagues had the stomach for dinner after this. Interesting, the shop was still open for business after the incident but not surprising really business was slow.As Taiwanese are very superstitious I will be surprised if this bread shop survives. The fear of the ghost of the unfortunate deceased will scare people away as has happened to many houses business that have had something bad , like a fire disaster or a murder happened. They are usually left empty for years afterwards

Definitely Keep: Darwin Award
If this woman had worked in this place then she should have definitely been aware of the dangerous nature of the elevator. Even if she didn't, she certainly should have known enough not to stick her head out while it was moving. Thanks, Kev!
