SHARON, CT ? A local man died in prison Wednesday, reportedly after choking on a plastic bag of marijuana he was trying to keep from guards.

State police detectives from the Eastern District Major Crime Squad are investigating the untimely death of Frank Campbell, two days after he suffered a choking episode at the Osborn Correctional Institutional in Somers. Department of Corrections spokesman Andrius Banevicius confirmed Campbell's death, but declined to give details pending the outcome of an investigation.

Campbell's mother, Anne, said Friday she told police she believes her son died as a result of mistreatment by prison guards. She confirmed a police investigation into her daughter-in-law, Alicia, for allegedly delivering marijuana to her son in a plastic bag. She confirmed a police account that her son swallowed the bag after it was found, rather than allow guards to confiscate it.

"He wasn't breathing for 11 minutes," she said, blaming correction officers she believed had beaten him previously. "I think he was choked."

State police Lt. J. Paul Vance said the incident followed a visit with relatives Saturday. "He suffered a choking incident," Vance said.
