Walking the Electronic Path of Doom

2010 Reader Submission
Pending Acceptance

A lawsuit was filed today in which a woman claims that she was nearly killed following online directions. According to the suit, Lauren Rosenberg, the plaintiff in this case, claimed that the "walking directions" given by Google Maps led her onto a busy highway (Utah State Highway 224, in this case), where she started walking across until she was hit by a car.

The Google Maps webpage does warn that their "walking directions" are in "beta" and may include missing sidewalks and paths. It's not known if this warning was displayed on Ms. Rosenberg's Blackberry mobile device at the time.

However, it would seem clear that, despite all of a company's best efforts to give accurate directions, common sense should win out. This, apparently, did not occur to Ms. Rosenberg as she nearly became another spot on the road in a game of "Lemming".

I don't know about you, but if an app on my smartphone gave me walking directions that included a highway without any sidewalks I'd probably find an alternate route. But then again I'm not this lady. Thanks, Paul. For the mods: http://tech.fortune.cnn.com/2010/05/29/if-google-told-you-to-jump-off-a-cliff-would-you/
