The tragedy happened on Thursday night when the bus in which Marshall Cole was riding with a group of hostel friends drove underneath a bridge in Centurion.

Cole, a resident at Huis Kiaat, apparently sat on top of the double-decker bus, known as Pretoria’s Purple Bus, of which the roof had been partially removed.

The accident happened in Jean Drive, where the road passed underneath the N14 highway.

One of the two Purple Buses, owned by Ulysses Tours & Safaris, was hired to take the male students to the event in Centurion.

“On the way back bus drove underneath a bridge and Cole’s head hit the bride,” said Tsunke. Tsunke said no other students were injured in the incident.

Alex Waters, a student from Huis Kiaat, who had booked the Purple Bus and had seen the accident happen, said Cole was sitting on a part of the bus roof that had not been removed when the accident happened.

“We warned him several times not to sit on the roof,” said Waters.

Jaco Robertse, owner of Ulysses Tours & Safaris, said on Sunday that the accident was the first incident in the seven years that the buses had been available for hire.

According to the conditions of hiring the bus, no passengers were allowed to stand up straight on the top while the bus was moving.

Under no circumstances was it allowed to stand on seats or on the roof.
