I'll Be Tumblin' Down The Mountain

2010 Reader Submission
Pending Acceptance

In 2009 I was a klutz. I would fall over shadows, run into nothing... and "leap before I looked" Reckless? YES! So one time I was out on the old tire swing, which hung over a 30-foot-vertical-drop, when I decided to run down the hill behind me, and jump onto the swing. I went WAAAAYYYY up the hill, ran down, and jumped onto the swing, causing me to skyrocket into the air. Here’s the stupid part. I was standing on the swing. So…It fell out from under me. Falling 10 feet, then rolling 30 feet, through Poison Ivy, sharp rocks, and trees. I hit five trees, 3 at the torso, and 2 to the head. At the bottom of the hill was a shallow creek, and guess what, MORE SHARP ROCKS!! 20 times I was “stabbed” in the back, 5 in the arm, 4 in the face, and 1 so close to my neck it almost killed me. Surprisingly I am still alive today…but that one wound was a centimeter from the Aorta, and I still have the scars. Does this make me an At-Risk Survivor? I don’t know, but I guess near-death experiences count…

Granted lots of kids do really stupid things (when I was 8 I ended up in the hospital with a concussion after doing something stupid, but that's another story), but the combination of injuries you suffered certainly makes this one stand out. Thanks for sharing, Winter!
