French Fries Well Done

2010 Reader Submission
Pending Acceptance

When I was young and working in a fast food restaurant it was obvious that a high degree of intelligence was not required by the employees, but I thought that it took at least a small amount of intelligence to become manager. Sadly this is not the case as was demonstrated by my manager Dennis as he became an At-Risk-Survivor.

One evening the pilot light for one of the deep fryers (fry vat) for the French fries went out and one of the employees asked Dennis to show her how to relight it. Dennis told everyone to gather 'round so that he could show us "Once and for all" the correct steps required to relight it.

He squatted down in front of the vat, opened the access doors and shouted out as he reached in for the main gas valve: "First, you turn on the main gas." Gas could be heard rushing into the burner area under the vat. I had no idea of the correct procedure but began to have my doubts if this was in fact the correct first step, so I decided to back up a little. "Next," he declared, "You get a match. Someone have a match? Who's got a match?" While a match was being located, I took the opportunity to back up a little more. "Next," he called out, "You light the match." Dennis and a large ball of flames rolled out of the front of the fry vat and across the room as the gas that had filled the space under the vat ignited. Someone pulled the fire extinguisher cord over the vat, the gas valve was quickly closed, and Dennis's hair extinguished. Dennis came away with nothing more than some hair missing from his arm, eyebrows and head. Not able to resist a good opportunity to make someone feel even worse about themselves after such a stupid act, I waited until things calmed down a little, made sure Dennis was OK, then said: "Dennis, could you show me that again, I think I missed a step?" I didn't work at that restaurant for very long.

LOL!!!! Considering that gas + flame = explosion is something my kids figured out at the ages of 5 and 3 from a TV SHOW, I'd say this guy was frying more than fries in that cooker! Thanks, Bob, and submit again! (And don't feel too bad; it would have required an extreme extrahuman effort to not make that comment to "Dennis"!)

I'm glad you aren't working there anymore. That clown of a manager is likely to blow up the whole joint next time around! Thanks, Bob!
