Blake Higdon - a Jolt of Reality

2010 Reader Submission
Pending Acceptance

Trying to raise money for "weed and rent money" in 2006, Blake Higdon climbed an Pleasanton, California electric pole to steal live copper wire carrying 130,000 volts. Now, in 2010 Higdon has gone public with his story to raise money for prosthetic arms and legs and to warn others about undertaking such foolish actions.

"All you think is man it's three dollars a pound," said Higdon of his copper quest. The jolt threw him 28 feet and felt like a shot to the head. "It's really a gory thing. They were amazed my eyeballs didn't melt," said Higdon.

Higdon remembers that after grabbing the wires "I was on fire" before blanking out. Five weeks later, then 24 year-old Higdon woke up in a hospital bed with no arms or legs. "They had to amputate me nine times in a 48-hour period," he said. "My bone marrow was fried."

"It's definitely a miracle and I could have died, I should have died." Cheated from a Darwin Award by modern medicine, the remaining parts of Mr. Higdon hope that others will go such deadly activity.

Never charged for his crime, Higdon feels that the loss of his limbs is punishment enough.

A crispy copping copper crook that DIDN'T wind up in a casket or crematory! Amazing! Thanks, Cameron, and submit again!
