Ice Drive Turns To Ice Dive

2010 Reader Submission
Pending Acceptance

An Honorable Mention goes to two Scots who decided to take their Peugeot 406 out for a drive along (not across!) the frozen surface of the Union Canal, in West Lothian, Scotland.

Needless to say, their car (weighing in at around 1600 kg) combined with their own weight was too much for the ice to cope with. And at the ages of 24 and 22, you'd think they'd know better than that!

Since both escaped with their lives, alas, this cannot be considered a full DA, but they're not going anywhere by soon - at least, not by car. They've been charged with reckless conduct, and may lose their licenses.

The Peugeot 406 is a large family saloon / sales rep car, and is decidedly unsuited for the challenge of ice driving.

Definitely Keep: Honorable Mention
My initial thought about this was that there's no self-selection since lots of people drive on ice with much larger vehicles during winter months. Where I used to live in New Hampshire they would race cars and even land (small) airplanes when the ice was thick enough. In places like Alaska and northern Canada they drive 18-wheelers hundreds of miles over ice to supply remote outposts. But these dolts decided to hot rod on a small canal that certainly doesn't look like it was anywhere near frozen enough to support them. That picture says it all. Thanks, Graeme!

Oh. My. Goodness. When you can still see the color of the water through the ice, it is NOT thick enough to drive on! Thanks, Graeme!
