Quebec provincial police say the 23-year-old broke into the Baie-Comeau facility by cutting a hole in the fence.

Sgt. Martine Isabelle says the suspect made an ill-advised move and received a powerful electric jolt.

She says employees for the power utility found the man.

He was suffering from serious burns and was driven to hospital.

Isabelle says his actions caused a 90-minute blackout in the region, about 400 kilometres northeast of Quebec City.

She says the man could face charges of breaking and entering and possession of a tool intended for burglary.
