Jacob "Jake" Gillett, 18, reached the summit of Saddle Mountain about 14 miles north of Seaside with three friends Saturday afternoon, then told them he planned to attempt a controlled slide down the cliff face and meet his friends on the main trail below or in the parking lot.

While most folks are satisfied with dune sliding, at most resulting in a 150 foot tumble and a broken limb, Jake decided to "Git-R-Dun." What started as a controlled rockslide, ended in hamburger when his lifeless corpse came to rest 1000 feet below the summit.

The friends reported him missing Saturday evening when he failed to meet them at the parking lot. "We're shocked," they claimed, "He's always doing stuff like this and comes out smiling."

Gillette's body was spotted Sunday morning at the bottom of a steep ravine about 1,000 feet below the spot where he attempted the slide. Due to the hazardous terrain, recovery workers were not able to reach Gillett until Monday morning when Clatsop County Rescue and Portland Mountain Rescue teams reached the body at about 8:30 and confirmed Gillett was dead.

Efforts are under way to recover the body.

A Vancouver, Wash., teen who apparently fell to his death on Saddle Mountain has been identified as Jacob "Jake" Gillett, according to Paul Williams, chief deputy with the Clatsop County Sheriff's Office.

Gillett, 18, reached the summit of the mountain about 14 miles north of Seaside with three friends Saturday afternoon, then said he planned to attempt a controlled slide down the cliff face and meet his friends on the main trail below or in the parking lot.

The friends reported him missing Saturday evening when he failed to show up. Clatsop County search and rescuers and the U.S. Coast Guard searched Saturday until dark and again Sunday morning.

Gillette's body was spotted Sunday morning at the bottom of a steep ravine about 1,000 feet below the spot where he attempted the slide. Due to the hazardous terrain, recovery workers were not able to reach Gillett until this morning when Clatsop County Rescue and Portland Mountain Rescue teams reached the body at about 8:30 and confirmed Gillett was dead. Efforts are under way to recover the body.
