land surveyor brainiac

2009 Reader Submission
Pending Acceptance

I'm a land surveyor in Atlanta, GA. back in 1987 i worked with a guy named miles m. now, some property corners here are set using 1" open top pipes, and during one survey, miles who had a habit of taking a 12" wooden stake used to mark traverse points, taking a machete and splitting it to put the wedge inside the pipe so an accurate measurement can be recorded. he would, most of the time hammer the stake firmly into the ground and then split it with his blade. on this day, after not much forethought he HELD THE STAKE IN HIS LEFT HAND, reared back with his blade and whack! missed and off came the tip of his left index finger. but it gets better. if that had been myself, it would be right off to the hospital. but miles just rinsed off the wound, wrapped it up using flagging, (plastic tape used by surveyors to mark the stakes and pins that we set) and it was work as usual.

You'd think that somebody who uses a machete on a regular basis would know better. Thanks, David.
