Firefighter Lockout

2008 Reader Submission
Pending Acceptance

Darwin/Wendy says, "This was plain and simple love. This is not stupid, this is a man's love and grief taking over his thoughts. No Darwin Award for a person trying to rescue their best friend from death. (AFAIK firefighters will not try to rescue a dog, however you plead; that the dog survived was due to his owner's efforts.)"
ORIGINAL SUBMISSION:

A man, whose home was on fire, ran back into the burning home to search for his missing 14 year old dog. Police and firefighters saved his life by forcibly removed him from the blaze.

Later, the man broke loose, ran to the house and barricaded the door to keep firefighters and police out while he searched for his dog in the smoke and flame-filled home. Firefighters broke down the door and rescued the foolish man a second time, as well as his dog, who suffered from charred fur and a burned tail.

The man later had a fatal heart attack in the back of the squad car from smoke inhalation.

Definitely Keep: Darwin Award
While I can certainly understand a pet owner wanting to rescue a beloved dog from a fire, the behavior of this man was well overboard. Fighting both the police & firemen was a good way to prevent them from doing their job. Ironically it sounds like the dog will survive. Thanks for the submission. Look, if this guy had said something like, "My old dog's in there. Please get him if you can," that makes sense. Going into the flames once is stupid, but can be understood. But running in AGAIN, barricading the door, and searching in a burning house where you don't have the proper equipment by a long shot...that's above and beyond the call of stupidity! Thanks!
