Crossbows and Alcohol Don't Mix

2008 Reader Submission
Pending Acceptance

Darwin says, "Thanks for the submission, but although foolhardy, this drunken loading of a crossbow seems like a fairly common dumb decision. Best to leave it in the Slush pile."
ORIGINAL SUBMISSION:

Don't have the whole story yet, as this just happened yesterday, but it has the makings of a good Darwin award, or perhaps honorable mention, depending on the outcome in the next few days.

Grasmere, BC is a small Canadian town on the border with USA (Population: 150). Not a lot to do in Grasmere outside of the farming, mining, and logging that goes on. So when young men and women get a chance to go to a neighbouring town for a party, most jump at the chance.

From the sound of things, this 19 year old male attended a party in nearby Fernie, BC (Pop: 5000). Many drinks were consumed, and somewhere in the evening, a crossbow was discovered, and he felt compelled to try it out.

First indications are that our victim was attempting to load the weapon with the crossbow bolt aimed towards him, when the unit discharged prematurely, penetrating his head.

This story will be updated as I hear more about this.

Definitely Keep: Honorable Mention
He chose to get plastered, and he wasn't careful where the arrow was pointing. Plus, this is a change from the shooting-self-with-gun stories! Thanks, Steve!

Doesn't this guy know that alcohol and crossbows don't mix? Thanks, Steve!
