The Nerve-Saw

2008 Reader Submission
Pending Acceptance

I'm from Germany, and here we call someone who is high-strung, talkative and a general pain-in-the-neck a "Nervensaege" which literally translates as "nerve-saw". It so happened that my brother was saddled with one of these when studying at "Technik-Kolleg", which is a school for electricians. Regarding tempers, my dear brother is the complete opposite of the nerve-saw, and it takes a LOT to make him angry.

Unfortunately, the nerve-saw finally succeeded in this in the scatter-brained attempt to change the bit of a drill, leaving the spanner(?) on it when he switched it on again. Naturally, the spanner finally gave in to centrifugal force of the rapidly spinnning bit and impacted heavily into the wall close to where my brother happened to be standing, leaving a small crater. My brother was unharmed, but severely pissed off about this, which, with him, does not show easily.

The next day, the two were building an electrical circuit, and the nerve-saw kept pestering him, not paying attention to anything that was done but constantly asking: "Can I plug it in, can I plug it in?", over and over...

My brother (calmly): "Well, technically, you can..."

The Nerve-saw: *click* - BOOOM! *jumps 2 meters from standstill*

My brother (serenely, holding up a resistor): "... but you better wait until after I put this in..."

Since they lost contact after graduating from the Kolleg, I don't know what happened to the guy, but since this kind of temper and electricty don't really mix well, I am quite sure this was a potential candidate for a Darwin Award if there ever was one.

Thanks, Brigitte. If that Nervensaege hasn't done himself in yet I'm sure we'll be hearing about him eventually...

I agree with Bruce. Am I reading this right that he tried to change a drill bit while the machine was on!?! Thanks Brigitte!
