Costly Copper

2008 Reader Submission
Pending Acceptance

A man is recovering in hospital with burns suffered while allegedly attempting to steal copper wire from an electrical station Thursday morning in Edmonton.

Police officers were conducting routine patrols near 128th Avenue and 96th Street early Tuesday morning when they heard a loud bang. Shortly after, a woman came running towards the officers and told them a man was on fire inside a nearby Epcor generator compound.

Police said the 49-year-old man sustained serious burns.

"There have been a couple of incidents in the past where someone has broken into a compound or a building and didn't go about the theft in the proper way and resulted in injuries. This is definitely one of the more serious injuries we've seen as a result," Edmonton police force spokeswoman Karen Carlson told CBC News.

The alleged thief may face criminal charges, police said.
