Lovebirds plunge from Bronx roof

A young couple hanging out on a Bronx rooftop after an evening of clubbing fell six stories to their death early Saturday, cops and friends said.

The bodies of the victims - identified by friends as Michael Rodriguez, 21, and Melissa Lopez, 19 - lay intertwined in the backyard of a Parkchester building.

"That's my son! That's my son! He's my only son," Jackie Rodriguez wailed as her son's body was removed. "I can't even think right now. I have no words."

Neighbors in the White Plains Road building heard a thud around 5 a.m. and looked out the window to see the bodies.

"I heard this noise. It was the sound of bodies hitting the ground," said Mohammed Rahman, who lives on the third floor. "It's very disturbing."

Neither victim lived in the building, and it was unclear why they were on the roof. Cops were calling the fall an accident but awaiting the results of autopsies.

"They were just hanging out up there - maybe a bit inebriated," a police source said.

"She apparently lost her balance, and he may have gone to grab her because there was only one thump, and it looked like they were intertwined when they fell."

Lopez and Rodriguez, whose nickname was Jinx, had been dating for several years, said the man's mom, who described their relationship as "puppy love." She said Rodriguez liked technology and hoped to enroll in CUNY.

Friend Shakia Ortiz, 26, said the pair met in sixth grade at JHS 125. "Mike and Melissa were very close," she said. "They used to always be together and make each other laugh."

Friends said the couple had gone dancing the night before and went to the building around 4:30 a.m. after Lopez's car was broken into.

"I saw him last night. He was in a great mood," said Chris Jalon, 24. "We were having some beers when his girl pulled up. He was happy to see her."

Distraught friends who gathered at the accident scene were aghast that the couple died so young.

"She was a real cute girl," said Mamadou Bah, 20. "She had everything going for her."

These guys thought it was a good idea to get plastered to the gills and then stand really really close to the edge of a roof. Barrier or not, that's stu-pid! Thanks, Ian!

Drunk or not, hanging out on the edge of a highrise roof is definitely not a good thing to do. Thanks, Ian.
