Man Suffers Burns In Gas Tank Explo

2008 Reader Submission
Pending Acceptance

FOREST GROVE, Ore. -- A man was severely burned when he unintentionally ignited the gas tank of a car he was salvaging.

Firefighters said it looked as though the 38-year-old man was using either a circular saw or torch to salvage a 1960s station wagon when the gas tank exploded.

When Forest Grove Fire and Rescue workers arrived the man had second-degree burns on his upper body, face, legs and airway. About 60 to 80 feet of grass had been burned in the man's yard.

The man was taken by LifeFlight to the Burn Center at Legacy Emanuel Hospital in Portland, firefighters said.

Rescue workers said the man didn't appear to be wearing any protective gear and hadn't drained the gas tank before working on the car.

I don't know about you but if I was going to salvage an old car using torches & circular saws I'd be sure to drain it of gas first. Thanks, Sean.

We get the cut-thru-the-undrained-gas-tank stories every so often, but this guy just raised the bar another yard or more! Just the age of the car (before certain safety requirements became mandatory) speaks against it. Plus, most idiots forget about the fumes; this guy didn't even bother to remove the liquid gas! What a MO-RON! Thanks, Sean.
