Morbid Curiosity: A Snapshot

2008 Reader Submission
Pending Acceptance

For some reason, we humans are fascinated by other people's misfortunes. Be it a neighbor's house burning down, pictures of a tornado-leveled town, or a car accident, we can't help but gawk. 22-year-old April Sterling of Dallas, TX was no exception. While driving on the LBJ Freeway one morning, her attention was caught by a fiery (but not fatal) 3-vehicle wreak in the opposite lanes. Like most morbidly curious people, she stopped to examine the scene more closely. Then, in a burst of inspiration (read: stupidity), she decided that witnessing the blazing accident just wasn't good enough... she wanted to take pictures.

Ms. Sterling got out of the car, intending to get closer to the accident so she could get better pictures. But in her attempt to cross multiple lanes of traffic, our aspiring paparazza was struck by a vehicle traveling in the HOV lane, throwing her across the freeway into the opposite lanes. She died at the hospital of her injuries, thus eliminating her from the gene pool and proving that photographic coverage of accidents should not be attempted by commuters.
