Burglary suspect nearly electrocutes self in Crockett By Karl Fischer

West County Times Article Launched: 06/12/2008 04:18:58 PM PDT

Crockett — Authorities intend to arrest a burglary suspect if he survives his near-electrocution Thursday morning atop a Crockett telephone pole.

A jogger spotted 39-year-old Juan Jose Chavez dangling from power lines near the end of Carquinez Scenic Drive and called to report a dead body about 7:40 a.m., Contra Costa sheriff's Sgt. Dan Mariner said.

Deputies arrived and found Chavez, a homeless man who frequents the Rodeo area, was alive but badly hurt and hanging about 20 feet off the ground in high-voltage lines. A Pacific Gas & Electric crew switched off the power and retrieved him in a cherry-picker, and an air ambulance took him to the UC Davis Medical Center in Sacramento in critical condition.

Mariner said Chavez apparently scaled a telephone pole to harvest wire to recycle. The Sheriff's Office plans to forward a felony complaint to the district attorney.
