2008 Reader Submission
Pending Acceptance

According to authorities, the 18-year-old victim who goes by Dustin had been drinking when he decided to walk out on a beam under the bridge.

Several friends who had been drinking as well tried to coax him off the beam. Witnesses said he crawled out 100-150 feet before he lost his balance and fell.

Family members said Dustin was somewhat of a risk taker, but they never expected a risk like this.

I think this could use a bit more of a writeup, but the photograph in the referenced article sure does put the story in perspective. Thanks for sending this in!

Definitely Keep: Darwin Award
Yes, the write-up is a bit lackluster, but there's enough stupidity to convict (and the photo helps)! Unfortunately, the National Guard is out one much-needed recruit, but given this fellow's sense of derring-don't, there's a National Guard unit somewhere out there which just got spared being strapped with a new regimental 8-ball!

There is a difference between "risk taker" and "fool". I'll leave it to you to decide where Dustin fits. Of course it is no secret as to which category I would choose for him. Thanks for the story.

Darwin Awards III: Survival of the Fittest

Hardback. 304 pages. Autographed.
$15
The human race's most popular humor series returns with a brand-new collection of macabre mishaps and misadventures. Honoring those who improve our gene pool by inadvertently removing themselves from it, the Darwin Awards III shows once more how uncommon common sense still is.

Salute the sheriff who inadvertently shot himself--twice! Witness the insurance defrauder who amputated his leg with a chainsaw! Heed the story of the farmer who avoided bee stings by sealing his head in a plastic bag! Cringe at the man crushed by a branch he'd just severed... directly over his head!

123 new stories, 18 full-page illustrations, plus discussions of transgenic animals, the origin of life, and more.

Autographed by Author!
