Fatal Boat Party Tragedy

2008 Reader Submission
Pending Acceptance

Note: The original article was already accepted as an honorable mention, but the woman died shortly after I submitted the article and should be a Darwin Award by now.

Woman found in bay Sunday dies

Long Beach, CA - A 20-year-old woman who allegedly left a boat party intoxicated and was found floating in Spinnaker Bay died Tuesday.

The Monrovia woman died at Community Hospital after being on life support since she was pulled from the water unconscious on Sunday night, said Will Nash, a spokesman for the Long Beach Fire Department. Her name was Nicole Cirillo, according to Long Beach Police spokeswoman Nancy Pratt.

Residents on the 300 block of Long Point in Spinnaker Bay discovered Cirillo at about 11 p.m. swimming in the bay. They tried to pull her up, but she swam underneath a dock and was unable to surface.

Neighbors said Cirillo was at an Easter party on a boat docked near the 300 block of Long Point when she reportedly left the party, went to a stranger's house nearby, and asked him for a ride home.

Bob Turansick said the woman came to his home and asked home for a ride. Turansick went upstairs to change and when he came back, he said she was gone.

"She seemed very much intoxicated," he said Monday.

Turansick and his wife soon found the woman swimming in Spinnaker Bay. He said the woman may have climbed over a locked gated to get near the water. They still don't know if she jumped or fell in.

The Turansicks and neighbor Tim Nicholson tried to pull the woman up, but she swam underneath the dock, between it and a boat, they said. She tried to come up for air between the dock and a boat, but the space was too small for her head.

"I think that's what did her in," Turansick said.

Cirillo tried to swim back under the dock toward the sea wall, but appeared floating facedown, he said.

Turansick jumped in the water after her, and with the help of his wife and Nicholson, was able to push Cirillo up. She wasn't breathing when they laid her out on the dock, they said.
