Man accused of copper theft dies

By Joshunda Sanders | Tuesday, March 4, 2008, 12:43 PM

A 31-year-old man who received 80,000 volts of electricity last week as he tried to steal copper wiring at a Austin Energy substation died Saturday, police said.

The man was identified by police today as Eddie Castro. He died from his injuries at Brooke Army Medical Center, an Austin police spokeswoman said.

On Wednesday afternoon, Castro caused about 7,300 Austin Energy customers to lose power as he tried to steal some copper wiring inside the Kingsbury substation near Airport Boulevard and Springdale Road, officials said.

Power went out about 3:30 p.m. for 7,300 customers and was restored about 5:30 p.m.

Castro had burns over 100 percent of his body after the incident and was flown to Brooke Army Medical Center in San Antonio. Austin-Travis County EMS spokesman Warren Hassinger said the man was in “extremely critical” condition Thursday.

Castro was not charged in connection with the incident, police spokeswoman Lisa Cortinas said.

Neutral: For Darwin's Eyes
Copper theft stories are way too common (we get them on almost a weekly basis) but Darwin does like seeing these. Thanks, Steve.
