Trail Blazing Gaffe

2008 Reader Submission
Pending Acceptance

This is an Honorary Darwin Award submission, because, obviously, this guy didn't die.

In 2005, at a summer camp in Texas, a 21 year old counselor was walking with his small group of 7 year old campers up a trail on their way back to their cabin. On the side of the trail, this counselor sees a cottonmouth and decides the best course of action is not, in fact, to get the little boys away from it to safety. No, he decided to try to kill it. With his tennis-shoed foot. Needless to say, it didn't work. He missed its head, but its head didn't miss his foot! It managed to dig one of its venomous fangs into his foot, causing the little boys to run screaming trying to find another counselor for help. He came back to camp a few days later on crutches, with a leg twice the normal size. This event apparently has not affected his views on how to handle wildlife, because in his picture on a popular networking website, the head of a Mallard duck is in his mouth.

We've had a few tales of dilettante camp counselors who have communed with snakes in one form or other, but what I really like about this one is a) he wore tennis shoes, b) he missed the snake entirely (my guess is that he was timid to begin with and even if he had hit the snake's head, all he would have done is piss it off even more), and c) he didn't learn the first time (not that a mallard is venomous or anything, but...)! Nice write-up, and definitely worth a chuckle or two! Thanks!

This counselor sure sounds like he has all the makings for a full fledged DA winner. I wonder if we will hear about him again, or perhaps already have. Thanks!
