A tough act to swallow for student

Press Association

Wednesday February 6, 2008 1:28 PM

A student ended up in hospital after swallowing his key to stop friends taking him home because he had drunk too much.

Chris Foster had downed six beers, vodka and whisky at a friend's flat before he swallowed the 2in Yale key.

The 18-year-old from Southampton, Hampshire, spent the night on the friend's sofa and borrowed a spare key to get back into his accommodation.

But he started to feel unwell the next day and a nurse at Bournemouth University, where he is studying computer-aided product design, told him the key might obstruct his digestive system and he should go to hospital.

He spent five hours in casualty at the Royal Bournemouth Hospital and was X-rayed.

Doctors told him to let nature take its course and the key emerged naturally, 31 hours later.

Mr Foster told the Basingstoke Gazette: "I just laughed at the idea of stopping drinking, I wanted to carry on and not go home.

"So I dry swallowed my own door key as a prank.

"It didn't hurt at the time but now my throat is slightly scratched and it's so painful to eat and drink."

Definitely Keep: Honorable Mention
I don't know about you, but I think it would take a lot more than 6 beers and some vodka & whiskey for me to willingly swallow a chunk of metal with a serrated edge. Thanks for the submission, Arne!

Definitely Toss: No Self-Selection
Not much chance that something as small as a door key would do any significant damage, so I have to vote thumbs down on this one even though it is an interesting story. Thanks, Arne

Actually, under the right (or wrong, depending on how you see it) circumstances, a dirty old key can do MUCH damage. The human digestive tract wasn't made to handle such items, and if it scrapes the wrong way coming out, he could get the mother of all infections. That, and the motive behind it all adds up to someone who may yet act again in the name of self-selection! Thanks, Arne!
