snowmobile rider killed on I-84

2007 Reader Submission
Pending Acceptance

Darwin says, "I don't see how this is anything but a simple mistaking of the direction of traffic -- it doesn't seem momentous enough a mistake to warrant the Darwin Award. Nevertheless thanks for the pointer to this ill fated action, C. Skoronek!"

Snowmobile Rider Killed On I-84 Police: Snowmobile Traveling In Wrong Direction

POSTED: 1:06 pm EST December 14, 2007

STURBRIDGE, Mass. -- A man riding a snowmobile on Interstate 84 in Sturbridge was killed when the vehicle collided with a car carrier, state police said.

Michael Bordeau, 36, of Charlton, was riding his snowmobile eastbound in the westbound center lane of the highway at about 1 a.m. when he collided head-on with the car carrier, state police said.

The truck driver, Victor Perez-Santiago, 31, of Lowell, was treated for minor injuries after the crash.

Two lanes of the highway were closed for about four hours after the crash.

Definitely Keep: Darwin Award
While this might be a non-event in northern Canada, I-84 is a major northeastern highway (cutting diagonally through Connecticut and part of a "short cut" from New York City to Boston). Sturbridge, Mass. is basically at or near the junction with I-90 (a major transcontinental Interstate). Having driven this route, I can tell you it is no place for snowmobiles, and to my knowledge this has never happened before . I will go DA here, if only because I know the route and how tempting it must be for snowmobiling mooks to dodge trucks the minute snow covers the highway!

I know of no place in the US where snowmobiles are welcome on the Interstate highways and this one was going the wrong way to boot! Thanks for the story.
