Their truck was da bomb!

2007 Reader Submission
Pending Acceptance

Richard and Robert Benson found an unexploded 500 pound bomb on the Barry Goldwater bombing range which is in the Salton Sea area of the desert in Southern California. What to do, what to do - OH! Load it onto the back of the pickup truck and then drive it all over Niland showing off their unusual trophy. Authorities were notified by person or persons who will likely never come close to qualifying for a Darwin Award and the authorities hauled the bomb, truck and all, out into the desert a safe distance from town and detonated the entire ensemble. This is a famous local story among many involving 'dud' explosives illegally 'salvaged' from the BG bomb range. It is stated to have happened mid 1990's and the local paper goes back only to 2000 with their online archives.

Neutral: Personal Account
I am going neutral on this one only because of the lack of detail. With a better write-up, it could really be a top-notch PA! Nevertheless, there's enough to go on here, so I will let it slide! Thanks, Joseph!

Maybe Toss: Urban Legend
This has all the earmarks of an Urban Legend to me. The fact that this is a "famous local story" sounds to me like just another case of "a friend of a friend of so-and-so told me so it must be true". According to a summary of the bomb range that I found, access is strictly controlled to prevent just such idiocy. Of course that doesn't mean people couldn't sneak on and dig up ordinance but without verification this sounds very unlikely to me.

Definitely Keep: Urban Legend
While it definitely smacks of a local Urban Legend, I like the fact that the main characters lost their truck (could have been their lives) in this stupidity convention. Thanks for the story, Joseph
