Lenoir man electrocuted on power pole

By Nathan Key, News-Topic Managing Editor

Saturday, October 13, 2007 7:35 PM EDT

A Lenoir man was electrocuted early Saturday morning after climbing a power pole near his home.

Thirty-three-year-old Adam Sean Wyke, of 1301 Winhurst Street, Lenoir, was pronounced dead at the scene by emergency responders. He was electrocuted while on a power pole and fell some 15 to 20 feet to the ground.

Officers and investigators with Lenoir Police Department as well as emergency personnel from Caldwell County EMS and Lenoir Fire Department were called to Winhurst Street in the Whitnel areas around 1:30 a.m. Saturday.

According to the police report, witnesses told investigators that Wyke had been receiving power illegally to his home. The report indicates that Wyke had consumed some alcoholic beverages, and he used a tree stand to climb the power pole in an attempt to prevent Duke Energy officials from detecting that he was obtaining electricity illegally.

Ken, electrocution stories are a dime a dozen these days given the price of recycled copper and the number of bozos who go looking for spare, unused copper running about 10,000 volts to recycle. However, this one is different. I wonder how he thought that his standing there would keep them from finding out he was stealing electricity? Thanks for the story.

Drinking and driving is bad enough, but drinking and fiddling with power lines is absolutely ludicrous. Thanks, Ken!
