Man killed building pipe bomb

2007 Reader Submission
Pending Acceptance

John Brandon Paradiso, 29, was building a pipe bomb from some old ammunition found on a farm when it exploded and killed him. Pipe bombs apparently were being used to blow up old vehicles on the farm so the metal could be sold as scrap. Paradiso was making the bombs using gunpowder from old .50-caliber machine gun-type ammunition and bullet fragments. The bomb exploded and Paradiso was hit by shrapnel and his clothes caught fire, he later died. At the time of the explosion, one of the property owners reportedly was outside the farm shop where Paradiso was building the bomb. The owner, whose name was not provided, apparently knew what Paradiso was doing. The explosion also ignited a second bomb nearby, but that bomb did not explode. The property owner, in a vain attempt to join Paradiso in paradise, managed to carry it out of the shop.

While attempting to build bombs and having them blow up on you isn't all that uncommon I'll vote for this one given that this guy had apparently been building bombs for a while. That the anonymous farm owner carried out another bomb is just icing on the cake.

An enabler and an enablee! There ARE easier ways to cut up scrap metal, but they require more work. Laziness indeed does the grim reaper's work! I also find myself wondering where one would procure 50 caliber rounds, but then again maybe Army-Navy Surplus stores out in the sticks carry more than just camping supplies! :-)
