Testing Body Armor 2

2007 Reader Submission
Pending Acceptance

While on duty in Iraq, I saw someone's home-made video tape, in which a group of 3 U.S. soldiers and 2 Iraqi soldiers attempted to test a U.S. made Interceptor Body Armor. One soldier, while wearing full body armor kit, walked down range, and held up a suit of body armor to his side. One of the Iraqi soldiers was ordered to shoot the body armor the dumb-ass downrange was holding.

The Iraqi raised his rifle (a chinese made AK-47 that looked older than my mother) and using an unsupported position he fired a round at dumb-ass held armor. The video showed a puff of dirt 5 feet away from dumb-ass. Apparently, this did not deter the group--they walked a bit closer to dumb-ass, and fired again. Again, they missed the armor dumb-ass was holding to the side, but they managed to hit dumb-ass in the leg, where he had no armor to protect him.

The video ended at this point, and I have no way to verify that the video was real. When I left Iraq, I was not allowed to take the video with me. I don't know what happened to the soldier who was shot, but he deserved it. It would have been too easy to set the armor in the dirt, walk off, and shoot until the armor was hit, with little to no risk. But no, he decided to try holding the armor for an Iraqi soldier to shoot, with an AK-47 that couldn't hit the broad side of a barn.

For the record, the army has tested the IBA. The improved SAPI plates soldiers wear will stop a round with a caliber of 7.62 with 60 grains of power at 75 yards and up. It is the best, proven armor available. But let experts test it.

I'm sorry, but I wouldn't hold a target for the best sharpshooter in the world. Even if he could guarantee that he wouldn't hit me there's still a good chance of being hit by fragments of the bullet or the target. It amazes me that I, having never shot anything more powerful than a .22, knows this and yet a soldier doesn't. Thanks for the story, Morgan.

I thought we're supposed to be TRAINING the Iraqi army, not enabling them!!! :-) Definitely a funny PA! Thanks, Morgan!
