Intercontinental Stowaway

2007 Reader Submission
Pending Acceptance

From http://www.ktvu.com/news/13714462/detail.html

An as yet unidentified person had just about enough of their subjugated, communist life in China and decided they were going to do something about it. After perhaps catching an old movie in which a lovable tramp or orphan stows away on a train or ship, our unidentified pioneer decided it was time to update this practice for the 21st century. In the early hours of the morning our hero snuck on to the airport runway and climbed up the nose gear into the housing compartment. “It’s not an easily accessible place,” said airport spokesman Michael McCarron, “[it] has been attempted, but it’s never been successful.”

Comfortably tucked away in the nose gear housing, our stowaway prepared for their flight. After the plane touched down in San Francisco, mechanics discovered the remains of our bold adventurer during a post-landing inspection. "At altitude there's no air to breathe and it's maybe minus-40 degrees for 12 hours," McCarron said. "You can't survive."

"People think they can make it into a country by hiding in a wheel well," said Federal Aviation Administration spokesman Ian Gregor. "Almost invariably they get crushed to death, freeze to death, or fall to death."

Perhaps China’s much lauded educational system glosses over the properties of Earth’s atmosphere.

I heard about this on the radio this morning and was expecting to see it submitted here. The report I heard indicated that our hero had warn numerous layers of clothing so he was apparently aware that he'd face severe cold. If he knew that then he should have also known about the lack of oxygen as well. Thanks for sending this in, Mathew.

I actually saw a picture (taken from a distance but blown up) of someone falling out of the wheel well of an airplane (this was 1400 feet off the ground and apparently the "passenger" was caught unaware when the gear came down; this fellow apparently survived the trip from Austrailia to Japan but deplaned a bit too early). I'm always astounded when this sort of thing happens, but this is the first time someone submitted such a story. I'll go DA on this as well!
