Pa. Man Killed Trying To Jump From Roof To Pool

POSTED: 11:32 am EDT July 17, 2007 UPDATED: 11:51 am EDT July 17, 2007

MIDDLETOWN, Pa. -- A Bucks County man died after he tried to jump from a 25-foot-high roof into a swimming pool at a party last weekend.

Police said Hugh Derby, 32, of Langhorne Manor, had been drinking when he told friends he was going swimming. He then climbed onto the roof and jumped.

Witnesses told police they heard a thud and saw Derby faced down in the pool.

People at the party pulled him from the pool and called 911. They told the operator he had broken both legs but was still breathing.

When an officer arrived a few minutes later, police said Derby wasn't breathing.

Emergency medical technicians tried to resuscitate Derby until they reached a Middletown hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

25 feet is a pretty good height to try to dive from. In the Olympics they only use a diving board 3 meters (about 9 feet) high, so he was attempting something more than twice as high. I also wonder if the pool was deep enough to allow for such a high dive... Thanks for sending this in, Garth.

When one drinks that much, one often feels invincible. Well, reality dictates otherwise. What a STUPID way to dive into a pool. Hitting the water the wrong way is like hitting cement. Oh, well...! Thanks, Garth!
