Man fooling around by tracks killed by train

By Valryn Warren Staff Writer

Wednesday, July 11, 2007

RIVERSIDE [Ohio] — Larry A. Schaffer Jr. jumped off the railroad tracks as friends begged him to stop playing around and the train blasted a warning. But he didn't move fast enough.

Schaffer, 32, of Riverside, was struck by the train about 2 a.m. Tuesday on tracks near Edna Avenue, north of Springfield Pike. He died before reaching Miami Valley Hospital.

"He jumped off, but pointed his rear end toward the train," Riverside Detective Sgt. Kim Griffin said.

"If you're next to the tracks when a train goes by, the way the air flows can suck you in. We don't know if part of him was still inside the track or if he just got sucked in."

Griffin said Schaffer was with two friends who witnessed the incident. "We believe alcohol was involved," Griffin said. [. . .]

Definitely Keep: For Darwin's Eyes
I don't agree with that comment about the air flow sucking you in (the MythBusters tested this a while back) but this does provide a bit more detail. Thanks, Anne.
