Man hopes a wall to fall 30 feet

2007 Reader Submission
Pending Acceptance

At Arco Arena, smoking kills. A spectator at Ultimate Fighting Championship at Arco Arena in Sacramento, CA went out for a smoke break. He decided he would rather smoke on the grass, so he hopped over a small three-four foot cement wall to fall 30-40 feet to the ground. Apparently he was unaware that he was on a balcony. Sacramento coroner's officials identified the man as Eraldo Cano, 26.

Neutral: Darwin Award
We get a lot of "look before you leap" type stories, but they usually occur in the dark of night and involve leaping over overpass medians thinking there's grass in the middle rather than a fatal drop. This happened in the early evening (I checked the UFC schedule) when there would still have been enough daylight outside to see, and certainly enough artificial light (pictures of the Arco Arena show sufficient outdoor lighting). This fellow was NOT very focused, and is worthy of at least nominal consideration!

Since James thinks there was enough light that this guy should have been able to see the drop then I'll go DA on this. Thanks, Carissa.

I just don't see this one at Darwin level, but we do appreciate that you sent us the story, Carissa

This "look before you leap" has a special feel that makes it a DA!
