Teens body found in gravel pit

2007 Reader Submission
Pending Acceptance

GREELEY - Divers have located the body of a teen who disappeared Friday night in a gravel pit.

Divers spent much of Friday night and part of Saturday morning searching for the teen before locating his body.

The Weld County Sheriff's Office says around 9 p.m. Friday the teen and a friend were trying to do a stunt with a car they had modified. The men had made changes to the car so it could go into the water.

Sheriff officials say the men built a makeshift ramp and drove the car up the ramp. After taking off from the ramp the car landed in the water wheels down but quickly sank.

The 20-year-old driver made it out of the car safely and was able to swim to shore, but the 17-year-old never surfaced.

Rescue crews received a call at around 9 p.m. and responded to the sand and gravel pit lake which is located on private property north of 25th Avenue in Greeley.

Divers were able to locate the car but the teen was not inside. His body was located Saturday morning but his identity has not been released.

Rescuers say the gravel pit is dangerous as the water is 100 feet deep in areas with chunks of concrete and sharp steel rebar along the shoreline.

The Weld County Sheriff's Office says the men had permission to be on the property and it is not clear if the 20-year-old will face charges. Officials say they will investigate any possible criminal activity that may have led up to the stunt.

Ok, my curiosity is piqued. Just what sorts of changes does one make to a car so that it can go into the water? Did they think they could turn an old junker into that James Bond car that was also a submarine? Thanks for sending this in, James!

A home-made amphibious vehicle? I wonder what our intrepid argonauts had in mind! Add to that their unwise choice of a VERY dangerous body of water, and the result is predictable! Full DA, says I!
