FYI - "bakkie" is a South African term for a pick up truck.

July 06 2007 at 03:00PM

A man was killed when he hit his head on an overhead road sign while he stood on the back of a moving bakkie in Johannesburg on Friday, paramedics said.

ER24 spokesperson Werner Vermaak said two men were standing on the back of the bakkie when the accident happened at about 8.30am on Boulevard road in Bruma.

"The two were standing on the back of the bakkie while it was travelling underneath a 2.1-metre height-restriction sign underneath the bridge.

"A cross bar enforcing the height restriction collided with the two men standing, killing one instantly," said Vermaak.

The dead man had head and face injuries.

The man next to him sustained serious head injuries. He was taken to the Bedford Gardens hospital.

Two other occupants who had been sitting in the bakkie were unharmed. The bakkie driver was uninjured.

"According to a bystander all the occupants are contract workers at the Eastgate shopping centre," said Vermaak. - Sapa

Standing up in the back of a pickup truck is stupid, but not necessarily excellent. Standing up in the back of a pickup truck and hitting a low bridge is borderline too common. Standing up in the back of a pickup truck and hitting the sign that's supposed to WARN you about a low bridge is plain funny! They should have just sat down. Of course, there's the chance that the truck was overloaded, but for now I will presume they just stood up out of choice!

Here in Boston we regularly see trucks get stuck under the low underpasses along the Charles River, but I've never heard of anything even close to this! Hitting the sign is one thing, but hitting it with your head? This sounds like something straight out of a cartoon or comedy show! Thanks, Brian!
