Man dies by snowmobile

2007 Reader Submission
Pending Acceptance

Mr. Case had complained for years to the Municipal government about a stump that was sticking out of the lake, asking them to remove it. The Essex Region Conservation Authority told they they didn't have the funds for it and that it wasn't their responsibility anyway. One day when he was riding his snowmobile at 70 kph, he looked away and his snowmobile crashed into the stump, throwing him quite a distance and killing him. "He knew what he was doing. He wasn't stupid," Case's wife said.

Neutral: For Darwin's Eyes
Well, it is obvious he knew it was there. On the other hand, it was a momentary lapse of attention. I would like for the boss to look at this one and decide. Could be a genuine DA here! Thanks for sending it, Zoe

Exactly! He KNEW it was there and yet managed to forget it was and crashed into it anyway... I think he definately qualifies... if only for teh 70kph flight!

Definitely Toss: No Self-Selection
This IS funny as hell, and the chances of hitting that ONE stump on that wide lake at roughly 40 MPH do make it seem like he had it coming. Nevertheless, I do not see any self selection at work, only a spot of extremely bad luck. Now had the government repeatedly warned him not to snowmobile on the lake and he did so, that might be different! Thanks so much for sending this in, Zoe, we DO appreciate it!

I tend to agree more with James on this one. Robert may not have known he was in the immediate vicinity of the stump when he hit it. If there was enough snow and ice on the lake for people to snowmobile on then the stump may very well have been obscured. Without obvious landmarks nearby and a layer of fresh snow the stump could have been virtually invisible to him. Thanks for the story, Zoe.

He was fully aware of the stump and still decided to do a record breaking lap, I guess he was unlucky but bad luck plus stupidity is what most Darwin awards are made of.
