Miner drills into testicles

2007 Reader Submission
Pending Acceptance

Darwin says,
In 1999 at a small mining town of Broken Hill in New South Wales, Australia, a second year plant mechanic apprentice had an "unfortunate" accident. I found this out in the morning meeting. Every morning the HR department met and discussed any time lost due to injury. It's usually things like "Operator dropped tool on knee, 30 mins" or "Person zapped by using welder in unsafe manner" but this morning the "accident" was just too funny to be taken seriously, or prevented. A second year apprentice by the name of Ben Chick was working the night shift. A piece of machinery had broken down, necessitating a steel bracket be made up to fix it. It involved nothing more than getting a peice of plate steel about a foot long and 4 inches wide, and drilling two holes in it. The steel was about 1/2 an inch thick. Usually, a drill press is used, with the steel viced into place, but in this instance, the drill press was broken. Ben could have walked 5 minutes to the next workshop, but instead got a powerful hand drill and attempted to drill into the metal while it was in the vice.

However, the table is about three and a half feet high. Ben is only five foot five and weighs about a hundred pounds. He just couldn't get the weight behind it to drill into the thick steel. Once again ignoring the smart option of walking to the next workshop, he decided that he'd succeed if he had more leverage. He undid the vice and put his right foot on a box, laying the metal on his right thigh and holding the other end with his left hand while drilling into the metal. Now, a few things should have occured to him by now. 1. Drilling in the direction of your body is not a smart thing to do. 2. putting every ounce of weight and energy into a drill will create inertia once it breaks through. 3. A Vanadium drill tip going at high speed into plate steel will be hot as all hell.

shortly after midnight, an almighty scream was heard throught the site.

The nearest worker came and found Ben on the ground screaming himself hoarse with a bit of plate steel hanging off the drill bit which was embedded into his groin area.

He was taken to hospital where they cut away the pants to find that the drill bit had 'bullseyed' his testicle. It was hot enough that it literally cooked it, along with it's partner. Worse, the skin was melted around it, meaning that drastic surgery was required to remove the bit. Fortunately the intense heat meant that no blood was lost, as the wound was cauterised.

Ben is now one testicle short, and the other is more like a hard boiled egg. In true fashion of the industry, he received a new nickname of "Shotgun" as he is always half cocked (It doesn't really make sense, but it stuck anyway).

As he has removed himself from the genepool, I'd like to nominate him for a darwin award.

My eyes were watering as I read this one! For sure this guy's brain was firmly in the OFF position. I enjoyed the write-up as well. Thanks for sharing with us, J.B, I nominated an HM.

This is amusing enough to keep, but I am skeptical because of the lack of verification. Nevertheless, he deserves consideration. We can attempt to verify this later. Copious stupidity on the part of the victim, and painful as hell to read! Thanks, JB!

Too good for a mere Personal Account.! I'll go for an HM and will worry about verification later. Good story, JB.

I'm with James on this one. The guy definitely short circuited any hope of passing on his genetic material. Hopefully colloboration can be found. Maybe you can get Ben to write us here and verify? Thanks JB

if we can get some verification, i would go DA, but without it I vote Honorable Mention!
