Hall in Tirol Nov 29th 2006

Horrible accident at work with garbage press.
The man, who on Tuesday in "Hall" was reported missing, was found Wednesday-early on his job - a parcel delivery service - dead. Unnoticed by the colleagues, he got caught in a hydraulic press.

Accident was recorded on video tape. Initially the closer circumstances for the accident were unclear. The death of the man could be however completely clarified by a videotape of a monitoring camera. The 48 year old worker started the hydraulic press and filled it first from the bottom with cardboard boxes.

Although the hydraulic press was engaged, the man then climbed - by the way a longtime employee of the company - to the edge of the charging hole and stepped on the cardboard boxes with his foot to push them downward. He got caught by the press, drawn in and crushed into the charging hole.

Coworkers did not notice accident. Because some time passed until his collegues used the press again and without anybody missing the worker the accident remained unnoticed for quite some time.

Only in the evening the worker was declared missing, a nocturnal search action then however was broken off. Wednesday morning the corpse of the man was discovered in the hydraulic press.

Normaly I would dismiss this as an 'accident'. However, doing what this guy did while the press was ON exhibits a supreme level of stupidity and arrogance. Machines don't care who they kill. Sad that nobody missed the poor guy. Thanks for sending this in, Xian

I concur. We've had one or two hydraulic press stories over the past couple of years, and at least one other involved climbing in and stepping on the cardboard. Rather stupid, and as it was caught on video, definitely verifiable! Isn't it the job of the MACHINE to compress the cardboard? Worthy of consideration, says I!

Somehow I don't think that I'll be able to look at a bale of crushed cardboard boxes in the future without wondering...

Perfect example of Evolution In Action. When in college I ran one of these machines myself. In addition to being carefully trained not to climb into it for any reason, there were lots of signs posted on the machine and nearby. Also, the machine had safety interlocks. I do wonder how the worker defeated those, but to climb in was the act of ultimate stupidity. Thanks for the story.
