Sewer Speleology

2006 Reader Submission
Pending Acceptance

Darwin says, "Vivid write-up! But I agree with Graham, I am not sure the men were expected to know the sewer system is subject to flash flooding. Thanks for the submission, Fer. I can tell you spent time crafting the story, and the result is a justly high Slush Pile score. I especially love the word 'Speleology' in the title. That's a new one!"
They called themselves "the nocturnal explorers". They gathered together and went into the sewers to explore them.

Saturday 12/16/06 was no ordinary night in Buenos Aires. The weather servise had issued an alert warning the population about a big storm with heavy rainfall.

That didn't prevent Abel García Serrano (27 y.o.) Rodrigo Martín Sierra (25), Alberto David Cardazzo (24) and Joaquín Prieto (17) from going down there. They ignored the warning and entered the underground pipeline.

They choose to explore the Vidal creek tubing (Buenos Aires has many underground streams and small rivers), one of the most known streams in Buenos Aires. Why is it so well-known? you gessed it: because every time there is heavy rainfall it overflows the pipeline and the neighbourhood gets flooded.

Around midnight the storm started and our 4 explorers got caught in the flash flood, where they met their demise.

Criteria.

Reproduction: the four guys are dead, so they removed themselves from the gene pool.

Excellence: they entered into a tubed stream system that often overflows. Saturday night was cloudy, with lots of lightning and thunders and with an official warning from the weather agency (Servicio Meteorologico nacional)

Self-selection: the four guys entered the sewers because they thought it was fun to explore them

Maturity: 3 of the 4 men were well above legal age here. and the remaining one was a couple of months under it.

Veracity: this story is in every newspaper, radio and tv news show here in Buenos Aires. I can provide you with links to many online newspapers which relate the story. You can search the Clarin, a Nacion or Pagina/12 (3 reputable newspapers) web sites and you'll see it (in spanish only)

Neutral: For Darwin's Eyes
Thanks, Fer, we already have this story, but I will let Darwin decide as you submitted an original write-up. BTW all participants are above the "legal age" (our age cutoff is 16).

Maybe Toss: Lacks Excellence
Until we know for certain that these lost souls were aware of the impending storm, to me this story is just a tragic accident as they'd done this many times before.

I like this write-up best. Thanks, Fer!

This is the third submission I have read on this one and the best. I'll pass iton for Darwin to decide.

Fer, although this is the thrid time I've seen the submission, your write-up is definitely the best! I am rejecting it only on the grounds that it (just barely) misses the humor needed for an archived story. But it's plenty stupid, and I do appreciate the submission.
