Safety Manager

2006 Reader Submission
Pending Acceptance

I don't think this will be concidered for an award, since it happend to me and obviously I am not dead but I thought you would get a kick out of it anyways.

In 1998 I was the Production and Safety Manager of a small door shop in Everett, Washington called JDS. One day, upon receiving a shipment of a new light-weight safety glasses I decided that I would see just how safe they were. We used a Senco 3/8" staple gun that would drive a 3" staple through maple to stitch our door jambs together, so I figured that would be the ultimate test for the glasses. I then proceeded to take off the pair that I was wearing, hold them down on the work table, pull back the safety on the staple gun and fire a round off from about 1" away from the lense. The staple ricoched off of the lense and hit me in the left eye.

Luckily, no one was around to witness this since I was supposed to be the Safety Manager. I was pissed off, so after wiping the blood off of my face I grabbed another pair of glasses, put them on and then tried to shoot another staple through the original pair. This time I was smart (or so I thought). I pushed the gun down as hard as I could on the lense and squeezed off a round. There was a tremendous kick from the gun and the staple again ricoched off of the lense and hit me in the mouth, giving me a bloody lip. I decided to give up after that.

I guess Remmington makes one hell of a pair of safety glasses....

Thanks, Tyson. You're a lucky man, especially after not heeding the FIRST 'warning'. Have you thought about a career change, i.e. 'Myth Busters' for example?

Tyson, that was FUNNY! I really admire your dedication to quality control (just don't do it again, will ya'? :-) I take it the glasses passed muster. After reading your account, I am going to go and get a pair!
