Gun Safety

2006 Reader Submission
Pending Acceptance

Darwin says, "No matter how many safeties a gun has, one should never aim and fire at oneself. Doing so is certainly stupid, but this'n doesn't rise to the level needed for an Honorable Mention. Compare with: 'People injured in the 2000 Michigan deer season include a man shot in the leg while trying to photograph his dog holding a rifle, which accidentally went off.' Also read:"

Midland accidental shooting investigation nearly finished

By Kelly Nankervis

12/07/2006

The investigation of an accidental shooting death that happened in Midland last week is nearly finished.

Midland Police were called to 1326 E. Ashman St. early Nov. 27 and found 19-year-old Isiah Borrero dead in the basement from a gunshot.

"The case on our part is closed," said Deputy Chief Bob Lane, adding detectives are waiting for test results from the Michigan State Police. Those test results will serve to confirm statements made by Borrero's girlfriend, statements police already believe are credible based upon evidence at the scene.

Lane said he does not know when police will have the final test results.

Borrero's girlfriend, according to the report, told police her boyfriend was playing with a gun and aiming it at his head before putting it in his mouth and pulling the trigger. She said he'd made a comment about the gun having two safetys before it discharged and killed him.

Yes, this is some kinda stupid! If you're so sure ANY weapon has a "safety" feature, test it outdoors in an appropriate place. One's mouth/head has never been considered a suitable choice of shooting range.

What puts this one slightly ahead of the plethora of gun-related incidents is the fact that this fellow insisted that the gun had TWO safetys! Gadzooks, what a ma-roon!
