I'll Do Anything!

2006 Reader Submission
Pending Acceptance

I had a friend once who would do anything to come to my house and play my video games. One day, he and I were riding our bikes after a really rainy day. We decided to ride our bikes into a apartment building parking structure that had an opening where rain pured in the night before. I noticed a large puddle in that parking structure. The puddle was located only about 2 feet away from a solid brick wall. I told my friend that I'd let him come to my house if he would ride his bike as fast as he could through that puddle toward the wall and attempt to stop after he hit the puddle. Desperate, he accepted my proposal. Unfortunately for him, he wasn't aware that the brakes won't work as well on wet tires. He raced through that puddle and slammed into the brick wall, smacking him into the wall head first. Luckly, he didn't sustain any fatal injuries, but he was in a lot of pain for a while.

I'm not sure which was the greater example of stupidity here, Konstantin. What if your friend *was* killed? Be careful what you wish for, and never dare a fool.

On the other hand, my dear Konstantin, perhaps you were trying to teach your "friend" a lesson! Either way one reads it, it's an amusing morality tale!

Maybe Toss: No Self-Selection
I shall be contrarian here and say that - IMO - since you instigated the action, there was no "self-selection" involved. And I dare say that that there might be the issue of maturity here. How old were the two of you?

Definately a personal account of a stupid driver meeting a brick wall.... Thanks for the submission!

I'm with Jack on this one. Your friend, even though he was the one who was pedalling, had no way of knowing about the brakes and you instigated it. This one just doesn't measure up. Thanks for the story though.
