Rattlesnake Standoff

2006 Reader Submission
Pending Acceptance

When police were called to the home of 36 year old Terry Jackson they were anticipating a domestic dispute, but they never expected the weapons they ended up facing. Jackson had been in an argument with her husband and been drinking, and when police arrived they found her holding a knife. The police attempted to calm her down and convince her to drop the knife, but instead she reached into a glass aquarium and started pulling out snakes one by one. Jackson, the owner of an exotic pet store, ended up with 5 snakes in her hands, three rattlesnakes and two copperhads, which she used to threaten the officers with. One need not be a herpetologist to know that alcohol and a handful of poisonous snakes don't mix, but that didn't stop our heroine. She decided to start swinging the snakes at the police, but the snakes themselves didn't take to kindly to this action and responded the way nature designed them. Even after being bitten repeatedly in the arms and face Jackson refused to submit to the police. Only after being tased by the officers was she transported to the hospital, where she is currently listed in critical condition.

Definitely Toss: Lacks Excellence
Alcohol makes humans do weird things - this time with snakes. As no-one was killed or seriously injured, no awards can be considered, Bruce, but thanks for sending in the story

Definitely Keep: For Darwin's Eyes
Bruce, you're on a roll, aren't you?! We received this story nearly a month ago when it happened, but this write-up is SO much better! I beg to differ with Graham. Even the alcohol factor can't diminish the cartoony visual! I will let Darwin decide on this one!

Definitely Keep: Honorable Mention
I have to agree with James! Many of our better awards have resulted when the victim's judgement was impaired by the use of recreational drugs (including alcohol). Should we toss out every submission where the victim had been consuming alcohol, I dare say that we'd not have as many funny stories, eh? Let the readers vote...
