Be sure to unload both barrels

I am an alumni from mesa high school. Our motto is carry on. The story of how it came to be isn’t something I’m proud of. In 1932, Zedo Ishikawa, a football player for the football team “The Jackrabbits”, was home the night before the first game of the season. He heard two dogs outside fighting and decided to break up the fight. He thought of using a double barreled gun to scare them away. Loaded both barrels. Went out side and shot one barrel into the air. The dogs didn’t react to the shot. So Zedo went over to the dogs and butted one on the head with the butt of his gun. The barrels were pointed at his chest. The second barrel went off. When the coach arrived at the seen Zedo was still alive and told the coach to “Play the game tomorrow, and carry on.” And that’s how Mesa High School got it’s motto.

Unlike in the movies where gun butts are often used as hammers, doing so can easily activate the trigger, as Zedo discovered. Was this an act of stupidity? I’d say yes. Interestingly enough, my old school’s motto was, “Play The Game.” Thanks for your submission, Brian

Maybe Toss: Too Common
I did some research, and the incident happened as described (often such incidents will be glorified or exaggerated). While this rather common gaff propelled the late Mr. Isikawa to immortality, the fact remains that using the butt of a gun as a hammer or weapon happens far too often for an award, as a perusal of our archives will show! Thanks for the submission, Brian!

I'm of mixed opinions on this, but it's an interesting story and - IMO - “Play the game tomorrow, and carry on." deserves to be imortalized. Thanks, Brian.

While using the butt of a gun may be fairly common in the archives, I doubt that any live on in such a way as to be made the school motto. I vote to keep this one even though the write up could have been a bit more humorous. Thanks for the story, Brian.

I agree that the butt of a gun is a much to common way to get shot. The schools motto being changed to honor this guy is indeed a good thing. I also agree the story could have been more detailed and funnier. But in the end the motto is the method here. I say its at least worth considering. Thanks Brian
