Early Bird gets the BOOM

2006 Reader Submission
Pending Acceptance

About two years into my cooking career, I was head cook at the restaurant where I worked. To start my day, I would turn on the grill and go to the back kitchen to start soups, prep lists, etc. After half an hour or so , I would start cooking the sausage and bacon on the grill which would be hot by now. One day,( this was about 6 in the morning ) I went through my ritual but when I put the bacon and sausage on the grill, it didn't start cooking. I then looked under the grill and discovered that the pilot lights had gone out. ( There were 6 gas burners for this grill) So, without thinking, I lit a match to relight them. The resulting explosion blew me across the kitchen and knocked me out for about ten minutes. If it hadn't been for the fact that I had turned on the exhaust hoods first, I probably would have been collecting a Darwin. As it was, I lost my eyebrows, singed my beard and mustache and inadvertantly "shaved" my chest hairs.

A well-told tale, Larry! You had me going "Noooo! DOn't LIGHT it!", so I guess it's worthy of a PA nomination!!! I often forget that restaurant burners are far more powerful than those on one's home stove; I guess it could have happened to anyone!

I wonder, Larry, did you not SMELL the gas? Your description of yourself made me laugh though.
