Belgrade - A Serbian man needed emergency surgery after he had sex with a hedgehog on a witchdoctor's advice, reported a news website.

Zoran Nikolovic, 35, from Belgrade, says the witchdoctor told him it would cure his premature ejaculation.

But he ended up in an operating theatre after the hedgehog's needles left his penis severely slashed.

A hospital spokesperson said: "The animal was apparently unhurt and the patient came off much worse from the encounter.

"We have managed to repair the damage to his penis.

Funny how these stories always seem to originate in the rural Balkans! Anyway, this is a somewhat better version. The motivation here is different from that in the Enumclaw horse story, ie no evidence of mental illness. This gullible peasant had the option to just say no but did it anyway of his own free will and accord. The witch did not administer medicine (as was the case in other such stories) or otherwise interfere with the man's decision. I'll vote HM.

Thanks for the story. I'm beginning to think that we have to deal with other countries' customs as well as our own. What the guy did in this case may look stupid to us but was it stupid to the customs of his country?

I draw the line on this "who are we to judge?" thinking at bestiality in general, let alone hedgehog sex. Also, I'm not inclined to believe this is really a widespread folk belief. I suspect the "witch" was less a priestess and more like a parlor psychic -- amusing herself by occasionally going for the bizarre in her counsel. I see this as a total failure of common sense rather than a cultural context that makes erinaceinaephilia seem sensible.

Well, I guess this answers my previous question: it was TO a hedgehog. I'm thinking the witch doctor is laughing into her tea at this one!
