Keep the fighting in the Ring

2006 Reader Submission
Pending Acceptance

25 year old Abdramane Kane and 34 year old Aboubacar Dabo learned the hard way that Darwin likes a front row seat when it comes to a good fight. Unfortunately for the two pugilists, their choice of location for their sparring match wasn't a very good one. Even at 3:30 in the morning one should expect a fair amount of traffic on a major expressway in New York City. But that didn't stop our dualing duo. What did stop them was a Ford Ranger pickup truck that was unable to stop or swerve to avoid them in time. Both Kane and Dabo were killed, but the driver of the truck was unharmed, nor was he arrested or ticketed by police.

well THAT explains the traffic on the Van Wyck last night! (I live about five or so miles north of where this happened). Whatever the cause (probably road rage), I can DEFINITELY vouch for the fact that the Van Wyck (or ANY other NYC area highway) is NOT the place to settle a score, even at 3:30 am (the time I usually return from gigs). I myself have had a few near misses with errant people trying to cross the highway in the middle of the night. Believe me, I KNOW! DA all the way!

I'm guessing if I substitute "Dan Ryan" for "Van Wyck" my experiences with major urban expressways otherwise translate nicely. I wish there was information on what instigated the fight, but I gather it is a spectacularly stupid place to do anything other than drive with the flow of traffic. That is sufficient in my judgement.

Thanks for the story, Bruce. While I have to agree with the guys about traffic and stupidity, etc, I've always wondered whether "Bystanders Hurt" includes the mental anguish suffered by people who end up running these dopey guys over. It's not really specified in the Rules but it must make a change to their lives.
