A man died early this morning when he tried to jump his all terrain vehicle over a Golden Gate canal.

According to Collier County sheriff's reports:

The accident happened at 1:42 a.m. when Chadrick Wilson, 26, of 345 14th Ave. N.E. tried to jump the canal at the end of his street.

The ATV traveled nearly 92 feet before striking the embankment.

Wilson, who was not wearing a helmet, was hurled from the ATV and killed.

"He was just riding and decided to jump the canal," Collier sheriff's spokeswoman Kristin Adams said.

Although vehicular accidents (to include ATV's) are too common, I haven't heard of anyone attempting to impulsively jump a canal before! Hell, he ALMOST made it, too! Of course, ALMOST doesn't quite count, and now he has eternity to ponder that. I'll vote DA, though I hope for a better write-up!

Thanks for the story. Okay, I'll go neutral on this one. 1) No helmet 2)Sufficient stupidity.

Yeah, this is borderline, but something about the spontenaity of it makes me see it as a valid candidate. I bet similar accidents are fairly common, but it doesn't seem like there is an excess of such submissions here so I'll vote for further consideration too.

Darwin Awards III: Survival of the Fittest

Hardback. 304 pages. Autographed.
$15
The human race's most popular humor series returns with a brand-new collection of macabre mishaps and misadventures. Honoring those who improve our gene pool by inadvertently removing themselves from it, the Darwin Awards III shows once more how uncommon common sense still is.

Salute the sheriff who inadvertently shot himself--twice! Witness the insurance defrauder who amputated his leg with a chainsaw! Heed the story of the farmer who avoided bee stings by sealing his head in a plastic bag! Cringe at the man crushed by a branch he'd just severed... directly over his head!

123 new stories, 18 full-page illustrations, plus discussions of transgenic animals, the origin of life, and more.
