"Machete-wielding intruder wanted guns - gunshop owner 30 July 2006

A machete-wielding man who burst into an Auckland gunshop repeatedly shouted "give me the guns or I'll kill you" before being shot by the terrified gun dealer, the dealer's father said.

Ray Carvell, co-owner of the Small Arms International Gunshop in Penrose, told the Herald on Sunday that his son Greg was now frightened for the safety of his wife and two daughters.

Police are still waiting for clearance from doctors to interview the 29-year-old victim who is in Auckland Hospital with a gunshot wound to the stomach.

Detective Senior Sergeant Simon Scott said yesterday that a decision on whether any charges would be laid was not expected until next week.

Mr Carvell senior told the newspaper the assailant burst into the gunshop about 10am on Thursday, pulling a machete from his bag and cornering Greg Carvell and co-worker Bruce Motley into the side staff area.

"He was threatening them with their lives.

"He said: 'Give me the guns or I'll kill you.' Advertisement Advertisement

"He kept repeating it ... it happened in a matter of seconds. What would you do?".

His son then did "the only thing he could do", Mr Carvell said.

He shot the man in the stomach at close range with a handgun.

The man dropped the machete and staggered towards the door before he fell, and his son ran to give him first aid.

Mr Motley called emergency services.

Mr Carvell said staff now believed they had seen the man in the shop before, perhaps "casing out the joint". "

Thanks, Tom. The additional info on this story may change my initial decision to scrap this. I will send this to Darwin for her consideration!

Yeah, I believe this has new information, and I believe I was originally positive on the suitability of this incident. In any case, I add my thanks to the response to this.
