Big Red Button

2006 Reader Submission
Pending Acceptance

At the age of 14, many things rapidly grow as a teenage boy. In my experience, common sense was not one of them. One day, me and around 40 other kids went on a school sponsored field trip to go Quad-biking. To our disappointment, we first had to sit through an hour-long safety brief, where the most important thing was drilling into our heads: don't press the big red button on the handle. As yours truly sped down a straight towards a corner, I decided that these dumb adults were just not letting us have fun. As the button was mounted right next to the hand-brake, I assumed it was an emergency brake. It was the Nitrous. Luckily for me, the bolted on tank was almost empty, and so i only went partially through the tire wall. One sprained ankle and broken wrist later, I hobbled out of Casualty, swearing never to touch the damn things again.

I will waive our maturity rule given your young age at the time of this incident because I happen to like this. I find it odd that a school would sponsor such a trip for youngsters (when I was 14, we went to Grant's Tomb in NYC), but the moral is clear. LISTEN TO YOUR INSTRUCTOR! Fortunately you learned early and have burned any stupidity out of your system! Stay safe, James! :-)

I only balk slightly because of the age factor, and I believe we can be more flexible when it comes to Personal Accounts. Also, though I don't entirely approve of this particular outing, it does warm my heart to know that the insurance business hasn't stripped all the fun out of school trips in every nation yet.

I'll defer to the guys' superior knowledge here. I know what a quad bike is but I have no idea how one operates. I'm okay with waiving the maturity rule on a PA for this one.

The age of these kids is a bit worrying. Why would these machines have any nitrous stil active on the bikes? The nitrous 'feature' could have simply been disabled, knowing that "kids will be kids" as this one clearly demonstrated. It is an interesting mental picture though. The "Don't Touch The Big Red Button" advice is akin to the ubiquitous "Wet Paint" sign - someone will touch it to find out!
